AGOBAY – KO KADO

PEOPLE, REPORTAGE

In the historic textile district of Nishijin, Kyoto, lies the studio and shop of Ko Kado, a ‘karakami’ (decorative paper) artisan. Housed in a century-old building, the space retains its former barbershop charm while showcasing Kado's handcrafted paper creations. After studying graphic design in San Francisco and working in New York, Kado returned to Kyoto to master the art of ‘karakami’. In 2009, he founded his studio, Kamisoe, where he blends traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic. Kado's work ranges from luxury hotels to boutique stationery, characterized by hand-dyed paper and original woodblock patterns. He emphasizes the coexistence of handcraft and technology, seeking innovative ways to honor and evolve traditional crafts.
