STONE & WATER, VALS

LANDSCAPE, PEOPLE

Sound and Silence

-

When spring moves into Vals, you don’t only notice it because the days gradually get longer, the sun warms you up quicker and the white patches on the steep slopes slowly disappear and retreat to the mountain summit. You don’t only see the spring but you hear it as well. One morning I open the window and take a look out to see what the weather has in store, you can’t really trust the the warmth yet. I breath in the fresh morning air and quite unexpectedly hear the gentle chimes of individual little bells. An almost forgotten and yet so familiar sound. I look up and my gaze stops at the sheep who are romping about on the brown meadow in front of their stall. After months in their winter accommodation with little room to run about, they all allowed out again and are enjoying freedom and bravely venturing across the field. Eventually, a man rounds them up and shepherds them back towards their stall, the jingling is loud and cheerful.
